I'm Obsessed!!! Top 10 Crime Documentaries & Podcasts
Ok don't freak out, I know this "obsession" is kinda weird. But there's something so captivating and interesting (and repulsive of course) about the actions and destinies of criminals and killers. I guess it's the fact that it's so hard to fathom and understand how a human being can make a decision to hurt and/or kill another human being, that makes this topic so interesting. How does a person get to that point? Why? It's all these questions and thoughts that get me drawn in and hooked on all of these crime and prison documentaries. So I decided to make a list of my "favorite" ones, or basically the ones that are very real and really dig deep into this topic. I can't stand documentaries that have phony reenactments and weird commentators, so these are the ones that do it right. 1 "Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer" This one is a classic. I would say watch this documentary first and then watch the movie "Monster", based on Aileen's life with Charlize Theron as the lead actress. Below is the full documentary on YouTube. 2 "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst"A documentary miniseries about the murderer Robert Durst and why he was suspected in several unsolved murders, amongst others of his wife and neighbor. It's a bit long and drawn out at times, but the build up for for the ending is all worth it. 3 "The Seven Five"This documentary is amazing. The way it's created and directed is so captivating and you're not bored for one second. The best part is all the interviews the got with both the suspect and the maffia boss, they are as much horrifying as they are funny. I mean the Dominican gang leader Adam Diaz and his comments are priceless (lol). A must watch (on Netflix)! 4 "Making a Murderer"I'm sure most people have seen this documentary series already as it was trending a few years back. But it was really interesting and totally worth watching. I watched (almost) all in one sitting and to this date probably the only show I've binge-watched. Still waiting for Season 2... Available on Netflix. 5 "Amanda Knox"An intersting story about a young women that was either innocent or a cold blooded killer who killed her roommate. I really enjoyed this one, it's well made with good interview both with Amanda Knox herself and her family. Worth watching (on Netflix) 6 "Into the Abyss"With capital punishment being a hot topic and death row a very foreign topic for someone that didn't grow up in the United States, this documentary talks about it all. They follow a death row sentenced inmate and record some of his interview just 8 days before his execution. It's a pretty raw documentary. The whole documentary is available on YouTube (below). 7 "The fear of 13"Continuing on the theme of death row, this documentary is about a convicted murder who spent 21 years on death row. Until he was released?! His DNA evidence proved his innocence of the crime. Great storytelling and well directed. 8 "Russia's Toughest Prison"I couldn't not include this documentary on the Russian prison system, or more specifically the worst and toughest Russian prison of them all. It's the first time camera crew is allowed inside this prison, and it is good. If you know the Russian language it's even more entertaining as you can pick up some things here and there outside of the main storyline. The whole documentary is up on YouTube (you're welcome). 9 "Rättegångspodden" (Swedish Only) This is a Swedish podcast, so only if you understand the Swedish language only. I have listened to all of the episodes and they're so well made. You can tell they've spent time on researching and finding all the court hearing tapes and notes. I am not patiently waiting for the third season in July. http://rattegangspodden.nu 10 "P3 Dokumentär" (Swedish Only)Another great Swedish podcast that covers highly publicized murder cases, scandals and more. I've gone through most of the episodes in the past few years and every time they post a new episode it's like Christmas. *BONUS* "En Mörk Historia" (Swedish Only)A new addition to my podcast subscriptions, but it's quickly becoming a favorite. Great storytelling about interesting murders or crimes in Sweden. So far they only have a few episodes, but hopefully they will keep on publishing more. Worth a listen for sure!
