Don’t “Nandu-ka-ru” too much!
I was reading about a man who was set to go and live alone on a desert island, like a kind of super-survival thing. Before he left he was talking to some Aborigines, the native people of Australia, and they gave him some tips that they use before they are ready to go on their big walk-about. For you who are not old enough to remember the “Crocodile Dundee” movies; a Walkabout historically refers to a rite of passage during which Indigenous male Australians would undergo a journey during adolescence, typically ages 10 to 16, and live in the wilderness for a period as long as six months to make the spiritual and traditional transition into manhood. Big Stuff! He explained, and I’ve tried to tell this story quite shortly, that from an Aboriginal perspective – they believe we’ve got 3 brains! The biggest and most important one, is your GUT and your instinct. The second biggest brain is your heart and your emotions, and the smallest brain, is your logical brain. Are you following me? At first this might sound a little bit crazy, but bear with me people. The word they use to describe this brain is “nandu-ka-ru”! And nandu-ka-ru is also the word that they use to describe a fishing net that’s tangled beyond repair, a nicer way to say fu*ked, in their ways. That’s the word they use to describe the logical brain and they believe the reason that western people confuse life so much, is that they live in the logical brain and it’s just a tool. Everything is meant to start in the gut, everything that you do, the way you live your life, it also starts down there. And it’s gets filtered by your heart and your emotions and then latterly it gets filtered in a lesser manner by your logic and your logical brain, but this for me immediately explained it. It just made everything fall into place. It’s not that that’s not got a place, it has, its filtered on the way up and everything must originate. And if you think about it, we have a lot of expressions about “following your gut”. “I didn’t know what it was, but I felt it in my gut”. Like our logical brain doesn’t know what’s wrong/going on yet but our GUT brain does. It’s like we’ve been programmed so much to listen to our head- brain so we’ve forgotten to follow our instincts, our GUT brain. Or maybe we’ve just poisoned it, so the signal isn’t as clear as it should be!? And they genuinely believe this, that our gut brain is our actual main brain and I’ve come to believe the same. I think everything should originate here and I think to live your life in an urban society where you’re constantly watching the clock and you’re involved in time and stresses and all this sort of stuff, it’s just all in your head isn’t it? And all that the aborigines were doing was trying to tell him, the more you live in your head - the more problems you’ll have, the more anxieties and fears and doubts. And they were absolutely right, the more you can come from an instinctual place…all of that problems just evaporates, and you can have a decent time in reality. So, should we a) be logical, b) listen to our hearts or c) follow our gutbrain? Of course, we should take advantage of all three.
