Northern Territory Journey Diary 1
16/5/2012 First two nights Okay, Groovin the Moo last Saturday was amazing. 360 was probably the highlight of the evening, he was awesome! After the festival I met up with Callum, said goodbye to Miles and Erica, and we went home to Newcastle. Sunday morning they put me on the train to Sydney and I arrived in Sydney around 3.30 PM. I met up with Francesca, an Italian exchange student I've had some contact with via facebook, and she showed me to the YHA where we were going to spend the night with the rest of the people who were coming with us on the trip. We spent the night on our own in Sydney. Monday morning, we met up with our leader Jim for breakfast at the YHA and that was the start of a very long bustrip. Bondi was our first stop, after that we headed of to Gundagai where we spent our first night in the tents. The night was freezing, around -4C I'd say. Double fluffy socks, tights, trackies, tshirt, double sloppy joes, blanket and sleepingbag. Important to keep every part of your body inside the sleepingbag, otherwise you'd freeze to death, not that it didn't feel like you already would, but to stick your nose out in the air would make your whole body shiver... Ok, you already did, but what ever, you get it, it was sooo cold! Tuesday, up at 6.20 AM, pack your stuff, take tents down, still freezing, 7 AM breakfast. 8 AM, bus leaving. Our next stop was Wagga Wagga for som shopping, and after a 6-7 hours drive (counted from Gundagai) we arrived in Mildura, Victoria. We spent the night in tents there as well, although it was a little warmer last night because us three girls, Julie (Norway), Hannah (Switzerland) and me decided to sleep in only half of the tent and keep warm from each others body heat, good plan I say. Last night we had dessert in front of the fire (marshmallows) and just had a nice chat, until we could hear something from the bushes, it turned out to be two jumping kangaroos. I'm looking out the window, the last 200km have been really flat and not much to look at, the road is mostly straight, but it surprises us with some small curves sometimes. Although I don't think it's anything like further out northwest, cause here I can still see loads of trees and bush. I'm going to have a nap now. Xox 17/5/2012 - Spent the night in jail Goooood morning sunshine! Alright, so last night we spent the night in gaol (jail). We'd been a bit naughty on the road, naa jokes. Yesterday we crossed the boarder to South Australia, we then later made a stop for lunch in Burra, wow what a little hole that was! We bought some more lollies and snacks in the shops.. Hehe. Around 4 PM we arrived to Gladstone Gaol, where we spent our night. The gaol was constructed between 1879 and 1981, we got to feed the eastern grey kangaroos and then we went in for dinner in the dining hall, meet pie with pees, mashed potatoes and gravy! Very nice! After washing up our dishes we were served a lovely looking vanilla custard slice! BUT! Started eating it, found a little black piece in it, picked it out and after that we found several black little things in our slices, after a closer look we could see that it was flies or little bugs, after going through them we even found heaps of worms in our slices. Funniest thing was that half of the people had already finished their dessert when we found it. We felt really bad and we tried to hide it, but we had to throw the slice in the bin, it was disgusting! After dinner we went for a ghoast tour, not really that scary as we thought, and after that we where meant to sleep in the actual cells two and two, but we decided to sleep in the hallway all together (there's 15 of us - 12 girls, 3 boys) and were there also was a fire. We got woken up at 5.45 AM this morning and we left Gladstone at 6.30 AM. We've been stopping at Port Augusta for some grossery and more lollie shopping (probably put on 5kg after this week). We're heading towards Coober Pedy tonight and we're going out for dinner at an italian restaurant tonight! Xox
